Medieval Replacement Careers

Categories: Downloads, Older Windle
So here it is - the replacement package for the careers from base game. This file is based on Twallans Career Data file, and if you have his Career Mod, it changes some wording in his additional part time careers too. This package ONLY changes text strings, it doesnt touch the coding.
This is a work in progress, as I find more strings to fine tune, I will post updates. Oh, and there are other medieval stuff in there too, like the Car Pool is called the wagon, and the Galleries in town are now churches.
I look forward to your feedback - I know there are medievalists out there, and I am pretending to be no such thing, I am just interested in history.
What I didnt do yet, is touching the wording for the School - as there is no school in my Windle hood yet. Well Twallan's teen schools, like the Military Academy is in there, but no kids schools. Text strings for the school may be added later.

Note: The female versions of these careers could use some more developing. In the Court Careers, I for now just made most levels called "Lady". In the others, they in most cases have the same name as the male version. I will very rarely let my female sims make "careers", because that just didn't happen in the medieval sim times. This is to make it realistic, it's not a political statement.

Political Career - Court
If your sim join the political career, he starts out as a Notary at the court. If he handles his cards right, he will maybe, one day, become the King. I recommend to use Awesome Mod with this, if you don't want many Kings in your hood.
Court Career
Military Career - the Garrison
If your sim joins the Garrison, he may, one day become a Knight.

Garrison Career
Law Enforcement - Law
Start as a Rat Catcher, but if you do well, you can either choose a career as a Lawyer and become an Alderman, or the Gaol career and become the First Executioner.
Law
Criminal - Outlaws
Out in the forest, there is a hideout for the Outlaws. Start as a beggar, but doing it right become a Master Thief, or even a Robber King!
Outlaw Career
Business - the Merchant Guild
If your sim join the Merchant Guild he can ultimately become a Merchant Master.
Merchant Career
Journalist - Scribe
Not many sims could read and write in those old sim times, but those who learned, could make a career as Scribes. Become a Scribe Master!
Scribe Career
Science - Scholar
Scholars starts as tutors and can ultimately become Court Astrologer.
Scholar Career
Music - Entertainer
In this version of the music career you play the medieval instruments and entertain the low and high sims. If talented and if your sim work hard, he can either become a Court Jester or a Court Poet.
Music Career

Sports - Jouster
Your sim can also become a famous Jouster. He starts as a Horse-Shoe Thrower, but can become a Jouster Master.

Jouster Career

Culinary
Your sim can become a Cook Esquire.

Culinary Career

Medical - Healer
If you add a hospital in the hood (maybe close to the Monastery, where the monks can help with the sick and dying?) your sim can work there as Leech.

Healer's Career

The part time careers - base game
Store is Market, Spa is the Public Baths. Your sim can be a peddler, or a brewer, or just a servant.

Barber (Spa)

Twallans Part Time careers
Gardener is Peasant. Unemployed is Home worker. I added some new options there, suitable with medieval times, but I will work some more on those.

To install: just place in your mod/package folder.

Special version with "King" replaced with Arch Duke, for those who don't want the King to be covered by the Career System.
Oh, and if you have my earlier files, for Culinary and the others, delete them, all are included in this one.

Failed to render control: Value does not fall within the expected range.

Just wanted to note that women did have careers in the middle ages, but that there was a lot of work done in the High middle ages to marginalize them in public life (for example there were a significant number of guildswomen until they slowly weren't allowed to join any more, but that didn't mean they stopped owning businesses). Also, many women had their careers through the church (otherwise known as Why so Many Nuns) or family- either a girl working with her father or she married someone in her field and the couple worked together. Or sometimes they worked in non-officially sanctioned fields like mid-wifery. Women always had careers, often basically the same ones that men had, but they were called something different or were otherwise "invisible".

I am aware of this, the question is how to handle it in the sim career system. There is a possibility of a female version of every career, which of course can be used to make a completely different one, but connected to the same rabbit hole. If anyone has input or suggestions about what female professions to add, I will gladly do that. I HAVE a midwife in the medical career. In the future I also plan to make real NEW careers and then some female ones can be added.

This looks amazing. The only problem I see is the King being at the top of the political career. Kings in my medieval world inherit the title through blood relation. Personally, if I knew how, I'd tweak it to make Duke or whatever the very highest rank.

That is possible to do - you could also let the rightful heir get this title via the debug menu, as the heir probably wouldnt need to "start at the bottom". Then he get the good earnings and the other benefits from being the King also. Then, if anyone threatens him as a king.. that could make some interesting stories. My sims advance very slowly in their careers, thanks to Awesome Mod, so no one is near the Kings title yet. I am also planning to let the first sim who reaches it be the founder of a new dynasty. He will get a nice new castle and so on.

These are some good careers. If you are looking for any suggestions for future careers, maybe a ecclesiastical/clergyman career would be interesting. Gastfyr: I agree that hereditary titles and feudalism aren't easy to represent in the career system. My idea would be to model the system using lots as 'fiefs'. The king or overlord gets to control all the land in town and grant certain groups of lots to his vassals. They can then divide up their lands further to vassals of their own, build them into their estates, and invite serfs to live on them. The head of the 'household' is the one designated with the title. Then to add a twist, the land-holder needs to maintain a good relationship with his overlord or risk losing his lands!

It's too bad certain individual careers can't be scaled harder and others easier. Anyway, this will be a very welcome addtion to my hood when I finally get it up and running. I lost all my TS3 and am having to reinstall. >:( But anyway, thank you so much for doing all this work! :D

@Chann: I have used the Mausoleum career as a kind of starting clergyman-career, and when I get to making all new careers I would like to have one specific for this, connected to this rabbithole. I also want a couple of crafter-careers, like tailors and such.

If you want to use this kind of custom content, you need to follow the instructions on the wiki page - I am sorry, but that is the only way.

This is fabulous. Thank you for making and sharing it. I'll see how it works in my new Royal Kingdom type of hood in Sunset Valley. What tutorial do you use for tweaking the careers? Twallan's career mod readme is hard to follow. Have you thought about writing a tutorial? There is an IT career on MTS that I think is standalone. Maybe you can look at how he did it?

Lion, I will make a post about this, easier for links and such. TY for the kind words :)

I am considering creating some additional medieval careers but am wondering if its possible to have them not use a uniform. I realize we can't use custom outfits yet but if they could keep their regular clothes, this would work. I haven't used yours yet so maybe you did this already. My medieval hood is waiting for the new world creator but I am getting started by making a new name list and hopefully, some careers. Yours are great, by the way! I will use them too. :) Thank you!

Here's a no uniforms to work mod, but I don't know if it conflicts with this career mod: http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=387954

This is INCREDIBLE. I would love to have this in my game. Question: Do I NEED any mods, awesome mods, whatevers in order for this to work right? Can I just put this in my game as-is and have it work without terrible crashing going on? Also, for fem careers you could always have stuff like: MUNDANE: Milkmaid, Chamber Maid, Servant Girl, Seamstress/Weaver, Washer Woman/Laundress, Spinster 'a name given to a woman who earned her living spinning yarn. Later this was expanded and any unmarried woman was called a spinster.' MEDICAL: Wet Nurse (they were professional breast feeders) RELIGIOUS: Fortune Teller/Wise Woman, Priestess, Abess, High Priestess HIGH CLASS: Lady-in-Waiting, Maîtresse-en-Titre
